Simple Tips On Proper Lifting

One of the major causes of low back pain is improper lifting techniques. Improper lifting techniques lead to nearly 35% of all occupational injuries. When you are flexed forward or even twisting your low back while lifting, load stress is uneven on the disc, pinching it between the vetebrae and aggravating the lumbar discs. These aggravated lumbar discs can lead to muscle spasm and low back pain. If this uneven load stress on the discs continually happens, it can lead to the disc herniating and pinching on the nerves in the low back. When that happens, symptoms can be very intense.

Here are some simple tips for lifting objects:

  1. Lift with an upright back. Don’t bend forward and curl your low back. Most of the bending should be coming from your hips.

  2. Lift with your legs. Most of (ideally all) the power will be coming from your legs. That will spare your low back from straining.

  3. Keep the object close to your body.

  4. Avoid twisting movements when lifting.

These tips will help to prevent low back injuries. Of course, there will be times when you do injury your low back. Call (630)-654-9300 and schedule an appointment. We’ll do our best to help you out.
